In a significant move for European digital sovereignty, Rackspace Technology has been officially awarded the lead infrastructure contract for the “Munich Cloud” initiative. The project aims to create a fully sovereign, municipal cloud environment for the city of Munich, ensuring that all citizen and government data remains under local jurisdiction.

Rackspace was selected for its extensive experience in managing complex hybrid-cloud environments and its commitment to open standards. The “Munich Cloud” will be built on an air-gapped OpenStack stack, providing the high security and transparency required for public sector workloads. Rackspace will manage the underlying hardware and orchestration layers, while the city maintains full control over its data and applications.

“This partnership is a cornerstone of our digital strategy,” said a city representative. By leveraging Rackspace’s expertise, Munich is building a “Trust-First” infrastructure that serves as a model for other European municipalities. The project is expected to go live in early 2027, providing a scalable and secure foundation for the city’s future AI and IoT services.
