Munich Unveils Europe's Most Advanced Deep Geothermal District Heating Project

Stadtwerke München has officially inaugurated its flagship deep geothermal facility in the southern district. Reaching depths of over four thousand meters into the Bavarian molasses basin, the high-capacity plant delivers clean thermal energy directly to Munich's district heating network. The innovative project is designed to heat up to eighty thousand residential units completely emission-free, marking a decisive milestone in Munich's transition to carbon-neutral heating.

Deep Basal Basin Technology

The system pumps hot water from deep underground layers, extracts the thermal energy using high-efficiency heat exchangers, and feeds it into the municipal grid. The water is then safely returned to the same underground layer in a completely closed loop, preserving environmental integrity and reservoir pressure.

Scaling Up Municipal Decarbonization

This project is part of Munich's grand plan to become the first major European city to heat its district network entirely with renewable energy sources. This massive facility provides stable baseload heating, fully independent of seasonal or weather fluctuations, offering a blueprint for other continental municipal energy suppliers.
