Munich City Council Approves Financial Planning for U9 Subway Link

The Munich City Council has officially ratified the extensive multi-billion Euro financial and structural framework for the highly anticipated U9 subway bypass line. This milestone decision marks one of the most significant municipal infrastructure commitments of the decade, aimed at addressing severe congestion across Munich’s rapid transit network.

The new U9 line will run from Implerstraße in the south to Elisabethplatz in the north, creating a direct north-south corridor that bypasses the highly congested Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and Marienplatz transit hubs. For years, the overlapping U3 and U6 subway lines have run at peak capacity, leading to frequent delays and platform crowding. By introducing the U9 bypass, MVG (Munich Public Transit Authority) expects to increase overall capacity on the north-south axis by more than 30%.

Technical highlights of the project include the integration of fully automated train routing technologies and next-generation energy recovery systems. Trains operating on the U9 corridor will utilize regenerative braking to feed kinetic energy back into the local power grid, operated in partnership with SWM (Stadtwerke München). This closed-loop efficiency model supports Munich’s long-term environmental target of transitioning to a completely climate-neutral public transport infrastructure by 2030. Construction is scheduled to progress in distinct phases to minimize local surface disruptions.
