As of June 2026, Munich's most ambitious infrastructure project, the 2nd S-Bahn Main Line, has reached a critical foundation phase at the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). Engineers have successfully completed the excavation and stabilization for the massive "Central Rise" floor slab, which will serve as the structural anchor for the new underground station. This milestone is essential for the arrival of the tunnel boring machines, scheduled for early 2027, which will link the central section with the eastern and western tunnel segments.
The project, managed by Deutsche Bahn in coordination with the Bavarian State and the City of Munich, aims to significantly increase the capacity and reliability of the S-Bahn network. By providing a second core route through the city, the new line will reduce bottlenecks and allow for more frequent service. Despite the complexities of tunneling through a densely built urban environment, the project team reports steady progress, with work at other key stations like Marienhof and Laim also advancing according to the 2026 schedule.
In addition to the tunneling work, 2026 has seen major upgrades to existing rail infrastructure to support the future integration of the 2nd Main Line. This includes modernized signaling systems and platform expansions at connecting stations. The project remains a cornerstone of Munich's long-term mobility strategy, designed to encourage a shift toward sustainable public transit and support the city's continued growth as a major European economic and cultural hub.
