2nd Main Line: Excavation Milestone at Central Station

Project Update: June 12, 2026

The construction of the 2nd Main Railway Line in Munich reached a pivotal milestone on June 12, 2026. At the Munich Central Station site, the excavation for the floor slab of the "central rise" (Zentraler Aufstieg) has entered its final stages. This underground hub will eventually connect the new deep station with the existing S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks, serving as the heart of the city's future transit infrastructure.

Engineers reported that the casting of the first section of the floor slab is imminent, creating the stable foundation required for subsequent tunneling phases. In September 2026, the first tunnel boring machine is scheduled to begin its journey from Donnersberger Brücke towards the Central Station. The complexity of working under a live, high-traffic transit hub has required innovative civil engineering solutions, including the installation of massive primary columns and diaphragm walls.

Despite the disruptions typical of such a large-scale project, the 2nd Main Line is crucial for doubling the capacity of Munich's regional rail network. Once completed, it will provide a high-frequency link across the city, reducing travel times and improving reliability for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters. The progress made in June 2026 is a strong indicator that this multi-billion euro investment is on track to transform Bavaria's mobility landscape.
